A tsunami alert has been issued for the coast of NSW and VIC Due to  the earthquake in New Zealand.

UPDATE:

A tsunami threat for the south-east Australian coast has passed without incident, following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake of the south-west coast of New Zealand.

The earthquake struck off the south-west coast of New Zealand’s South Island shortly before 7:30pm AEST, prompting a tsunami warning for south of the Hunter in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a series of tsunami warnings for the east coast of Australia in the wake of an earthquake which struck off the coast of New Zealand.

The weather bureau says there is a potential tsunami threat to New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island.

The weather bureau has urged people to get out of the water and move away from the coast.

"Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first wave not necessarily being the largest."

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the south-west coast of New Zealand’s South Island at 7.22pm (AEST).
