What is telethon ?

Telethon is a registered children’s charitable trust dedicated to raising funds to improve the lives of children and young people throughout Western Australia. Every year common people and stars get together to  raise funds for these sick children.

Last year’s Telethon raised 6 million and brought the total amount raised to $94 million since the event began in 1968. Organisers were hoping to reach the $100 million mark, which would be a landmark for assistance to charitable organisations, children’s hospitals and medical facilities in WA.

Stars attending telethon 2010

Hollywood star and “Telethon guest of honour John Travolta” dashed back to the United States last night after receiving news that pregnant wife Kelly Preston had gone into labour. but there are plenty of other stars that are attending like Actor Hugh Sheridan, from hit TV show Packed to the Rafters, and Better Homes and Gardens hunk Rob Palme , BooBoo Stewart, the 16-year-old American star of Twilight: Eclipse and the yet-to-be released Twilight: Breaking Dawn films.

So who are the children telethon stars this year ?

Phoebe of Seville Grove (Age 10)

Phoebe is described as a little fashionista who loves the camera and is very outgoing. She is extremely articulate, bubbly and friendly with everyone, always stopping by to say hello to staff when at PMH for appointments. She is very chatty and loves to strike up a conversation.

Phoebe was born with a Cleft Palate and Cystic Hygroma, with swelling in the neck, mouth and face. She has had a number of surgeries and injections to reduce the swelling, but still has a visible lump on the side of her face.  In fact, she had eleven operations before her 1st birthday.

Phoebe is now in Grade 4 and is extremely excited about representing all the kids from Perth at Telethon 2010.

Lachy of Boyanup (Age

Lachy loves the West Coast Eagles, motorbike riding (BMX), football, soccer and hanging out with his friends. He attends Boyanup Primary School and has three younger sisters.  He’s a happy, outgoing child and a little bit cheeky and he gets away with it with his big blue eyes and dimples.

Lachy was diagnosed at age four with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (a form of leukaemia) and underwent extensive chemotherapy treatment for six months at PMH.  Lachy relapsed in April 2008 and underwent another twelve months of chemotherapy.  Lachy is now in remission and doing very well.Lachy’s Mum, Holly is a tireless campaigner for the Leukaemia Foundation and other charities.Lachy is looking forward to representing all the regional kids from around Western Australia at Telethon 2010.

Call the Telethon office during business hours 9am-5pm (W.A. time) Monday to Friday by calling 08 9344 0754. Once your donation is processed, a receipt will be posted to you.

I will be heading  down to the studios to take some calls  and doing my bit, but i am sure they will be celebrity’s doing  weird and crazy stuff as usual  all in the name of charity. You will definitely see a few of them  with their hair off and shiny round heads  just for charity.

Mr Rudd fronted the charity event, which is in its 42nd year, after a community cabinet meeting in Geraldton on Thursday and a trip to Broome on Friday, despite being diagnosed with the ailment this week.

What is telethon ?

Telethon is a registered childrens charitable trust dedicated to raising funds to improve the lives of children and young people throughout Western Australia. Since its inception, Telethon has raised over $87 million and provided much needed financial assistance to a significant number of charitable organisations, children’s hospitals and research/medical facilities in Western Australia.

Some of the iconic Telethon events and projects include The Lexus Telethon Ball, HBF Telethon Toddle, The Telethon Kids Carnival, Telethon Big Breakfast, Telethon Seniors Concert, Fat Cat Dolls, Telethon Viva Photo Album, Telethon Movie Days and many more. A new range of events and projects are established for Telethon each year.

The charity has received long standing support from leading Western Australian companies such as the JWH Group, which builds the Telethon homes, the Satterley Group and Mirvac Fini, suppliers of the land on which the 2009 Regional and Metropolitan homes are built.

BankWest supports Telethon through its service centres which facilitate the collection of donations after the Telethon weekend. Lexus of Perth sponsor the annual Lexus Telethon Ball, HBF and Toyota respectively, sponsor the HBF Telethon Toddle and the In Touch with Telethon promotions.

The Perth Convention Exhibition Centre enables Telethon to bring the fun and excitement to Perth families by providing the venue for the television broadcast, the Beneficiaries Expo, and the Kids’ Carnival. Telethon Weekend 2009

The Telethon Weekend live 25-hour charity appeal is held at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

It is televised on the Channel 7 Network and on the Golden West Network throughout Regional WA. National Channel 7 Network personalities and leading Australian musicians and performers make regular appearances and performances during the program. The Weekend is a celebration of the dedication and commitment of thousands of Western Australians who support Telethon each year.
