Perth man Dies in Jakarta Blast

There are 41 injured including 14 foreigners in explosions at the JW Marriott hotel and the nearby Ritz-Carlton in central Jakarta. A pair of powerful bombs exploded at two luxury hotels in an upscale Jakarta business district Friday

The Department of Foreign Affairs has established a consular crisis centre, with a hotline of 1300 555 135 – 1300 555 135.

Australian trade official Craig Senger and Australian Perth businessman Nathan Verity were believed to be among the victims of the deadly bomb blasts.

Geoff Lazarus told AAP Mr Senger, his nephew, was almost certainly among the dead.

Nathan Verity was a human resources and recruitment manager based in Indonesia.

Jim Truscott, a personal friend, said Mr Verity lived in Perth with his wife Vanessa and five-year-old son but ran his business out of Jakarta

The blasts at the neighbouring Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels blew out windows and scattered debris and glass across the street.

Statement From Officials

‘Our travel advisory does warn that if you need to travel to Indonesia there is a threat, a high threat, of terrorist attack.’

Australians travelling to Indonesia needed to heed the advisory, which warns of the need to exercise extreme caution, especially in areas such as the hotel district where westerners congregate, Ms Bishop said.

It was to be hoped the attacks were unrelated to the recent Indonesian presidential election, she said.

The closed-circuit television footage, aired on local TV One station, shows the man wearing a suit and baseball cap walking awkwardly into the restaurant before the blast.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, confronting Indonesia’s bloodiest attacks since 2005 barely a fortnight after he won re-election, denounced the attacks as an ‘act of terrorism’.
