Chinese New Year (Chinese: 春節, 春节, Chūnjíe; 農曆新年, 农历新年, Nónglì Xīnnián; or 過年, 过年, Guònián), also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year’s Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, i.e. the day of the second new moon after the day on which the winter solstice occurs, unless there is an intercalary eleventh or twelfth month in the lead-up to the New Year—in such a case, the New Year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice. (The next time this occurs is in 2033.) The Chinese New Year period ends with the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth day of the month.

The small mining town of Rosebery on Tasmania’s west coast is divided over the plans by some residents to sue the local mine owner. Ten residents say they have poisoned by the mine’s heavy metals
Rosebery owes its existence to the Minmetals minning company, which produces zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold, but 10 residents say they have been poisoned by the mine’s heavy metals. The mine is the town’s main employer and claims that it is poisoning locals has angered a much bigger group of Rosebery residents.
FROM CRIKEY:http://www.crikey.com.au/2009/07/10/is-rosebery-a-health-hazard/
In November last year, two women from the mining town of Rosebery in the hills of western Tasmania hit local media headlines with a call for an investigation into the presence of heavy metals in the water around their homes.
ROSEBERY MAP 7470
They got their investigation, but now they have rejected the findings of a Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services toxicology investigation into the presence of heavy metals in their town and health problems experienced by locals, saying the DHHS failed to conduct adequate testing of humans and ground water in their research.
Locals say they have suffered a range of symptoms including dizziness and hair loss from heavy metals that have seeped onto their properties.

Local woman Jo Powell was so concerned at the claims she set up an online website called Rosebery is not Contaminated.
FELICITY OGILVIE: Four-hundred people have already joined her Facebook page. But Jo Powell says some of the comments posted have been so offensive she’s had to remove them.
Testing for the presence of heavy metals and their effect on residents is not unusual in Australia. In 2007, residents of the West Australian town of Esperance were poisoned by lead carbonate dust being transported from a mine in Wiluna to the Port of Esperance for bulk loading.
Unlike Rosebery, in Esperance ground water was not an issue, but soil, marine sediment and air testing was undertaken by the West Australian government as well as isotopic fingerprinting linking the lead found in humans to that of the Wiluna mine.

WA has had a scorcher of a heat wave for the past three days . we have had 40 degrees plus for the last three days and the hot days are supposed to continue. Patrick Ward from the Bureau of Meteorology says the last time Perth recorded three consecutive days over 40 degrees was in March 2007.
The 40* Plus heatwave In PerthA heat wave is prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity. There is no universal definition of a heat wave; the term is relative to the usual weather in the area. Severe heat waves have caused catastrophic crop failures, thousands of deaths from hyperthermia, and widespread power outages due to increased use of air conditioning.
Heatwaves are caused by extremely hot and humid days with very little air movement to help cool things down.
Changes in Behaviour due to hot weather of heatwaves
There are other changes in our behaviour that arise from the heat.
"When you are dehydrated, your body is under stress. It changes your mood and you choose stereotypical solutions rather than rational solutions. You get into the ‘child state’. You whine and moan. There is anger, irritation, poor judgement and fatigue.
As our cities and towns get hotter and hotter during heatwave conditions, people and animals have difficulty in keeping cool. Heatwaves are probably the most under-rated weather hazard in Australia, essentially because they are viewed as a ‘passive’ hazard in contrast to the more widely studied catastrophic hazards such as tropical cyclones and earthquakes. According to Coates (1996), heatwaves kill more people than any other natural hazard experienced in Australia. In a study on the consequences of h
eatwaves, Andrews (1994) reported that in the period between 1803 and 1992, at least 4287 people died as a direct result of heatwaves. This was almost twice the number of fatalities attributed to either tropical cyclones or floods over much the same time frame
Extract from The West Australian (21 February, 1995) ,
Perth’s heatwave caused record power consumption and overstretched the ambulance services. There were many more assaults and brawls than normal in the early hours of Sunday when Perth sweltered through the hottest February night for ten years. The real stinker was back in 1933 when we copped four days over 40, 44.3, 44.6. 42.3 and then a cool change with 40.1
Heatwave ’s not only makes the local temperature rise but also makes many peoples temperature rise, due to the uneasiness and hot weather , people can get stressed and frustrated and easily get into arguments and fights.
Drink lots of water and keep a bottle of cool water handy
If you got a pool or bathtub .. now is the time to indulge and make the most of it ( but make sure slip slop!! )
Instead of using your gas /stove to cook up lunch, try having salads, cold sandwiches, or cold cereals for lunch. Leave cooking on the stove for later in the evening when it may not be as hot.
Hang heavy insulating blankets or something similar in the windows that the sun shines through daily. The more sun you can block from shining directly into your home the cooler it will be.
A cool shower can help your entire body cool down.

Wear Light Colors: Darker colors will absorb the sun’s rays and be warmer than light or white clothing, which reflects light and heat. Wear natural summer clothing. Wear natural fabrics (cotton, silk, linen) rather than polyester, rayon, or other artificial fibers (with the possible exception of performance fabrics)
Close your blinds and curtains during the day to block the sun. For even better protection, get aluminized blinds (or use removable sheets of cardboard cut to size and covered in foil.)
Have cool summer drinks that will keep you cool
Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration
Cool as a cucumber! Slice a thin piece of cold cucumber (from the fridge or a cooler) and stick it in the middle of your forehead! This feels fantastic on a hot day or when stuck in a hot car, and works almost immediately!
Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses

17 Jan 2010Yes Perth restaurants will give the Sydney and Melbourne restaurants a run for their money anytime. They are better most of the time or then as good as some of the finer Sydney restaurants. Only difference is in Perth you pay more for your food compared to Sydney and Melbourne. It is more expensive.
But when you dine at zafferanos , you would not mind paying more than what you pay for the same food in Sydney or Qld or Melbourne, because the food is just delicious and exquisite , the ambience real 7 star ( but still got that relaxing feeling) and the restaurant decor just right. The wait staff here are impeccably professional and untrusive. Unlike many restaurants in Perth, they know how to deliver silver service here. This is a restaurant to keep for a very special occasion ,unless off course you can afford it on a regular basis .
Me and my better half decided to have the evening out in Perth at a good restaurant to celebrate a occasion. we had already been to city beach restaurant Oceanus and Kings park restaurant Frasers earlier and C restaurant ( the revolving restaurant with 360 degree city views ) in perth and definitely put them together in this category if not a better category. The cuisine is mainly Italian and seafood.
The sea views are really spectacular and also calming at the same time at zafferanos ,make sure you get a good seat right next to the water
zafferanos is fine dining restaurant and the service and food definitely reflect that. The food was laid out on the plate perfectly and looked really exquisite like on those master chef tv shows , and the taste definitely left me attacking the food right up to the last morsel , without a spec of food left behind. The view at this restaurant is to die for!!! Simply stunning panorama of the river and the city
Food at Zafferanos
What we had for dinner ?
We had some delicious seafood as well as chicken dishes as below. click here -> for the whole menu
Entree:
Gamberi Piccanti
Garlic king prawns lightly fried tossed through chili confit and served over a fresh avocado crush. – $29
Mains:
Polletto alla Griglia
Marinated char-grilled chicken, served with a Cointreau and orange sage sauce, potato croquette and bok choy. – $49
Pesce del giorno
Zafferano’s fresh selection of fish changes everyday. It is served with seasonal vegetables and sauce to compliment the dish.( from what i remember htis was served with sauce with a Cajun spice, saffron potato and spinach crush)
Side dish :
Insalata di Campo
Garden leaves with cucumber, tomato, pine nuts and carrot dressed with extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon.- $13
We recieved very professional service and quick service too , but i suppose it could be because this day the restaurant was not exceptionally busy. we would like to come here on a Friday or Saturday night too see if it makes a difference to the service and food . Its definitely on my must re-visit list.
Parking can be a problem as the parking area is very small, so often you have to park across the very busy Mount’s Bay Road and walk back via the overpass.
Where is zafferanos ?
Zafferanos is in Perth, Western Australia and is situated in the historical Swan Brewery, overlooking the Swan River on Mounts Bay Road

4 Jan 2010Right bang in the middle of my Christmas & new year break My internet connection gets shaped because i have run out of my internet alotted quota , now we all know what a pain that can be when you are used to a fast broadband connection. I was really pissed Until i got a email from Amnet saying that i could buy a small additional allowance package to get my usual speed back up until it resets a couple of days later from next billing cycle. I grabbed the offer considering i would be more at home during this Christmas break and would use the internet more and also considering it was just $10.
I also like to go with the underdog in the industry, often the leaders in the pack being too big loose sight of their customers and start to provide shoddy service. Amnet is still a growing company and i still get a tech guy on the phone quite quick who speaks to me quite friendly and is willing to go the extra bit to solve my problem on that rare occasion that i need to call them.
Additional Allowance Purchase package
I found this package quite useful in these times of need , here is what amnet has to say about their package
“At Amnet we understand that your usage can fluctuate, like when the kids are on holiday, that’s why we designed the Additional Allowance Purchase tool. Using the Additional Allowance Purchase tool you can now purchase an additional amount of download allowance should you exceed your quota.”

for the last three years running Amnet has been ranked amongst the top 5 ISPs in the country. Voted number 5 in 2007, number 3 in 2008 and this year we were voted number 2 and awarded the highly commended ranking in PC Authority Magazine’s Best Tech Awards. We were given a six star rating for Customer Support, Service Reliability and Value For Money. This placed Amnet ahead of many other providers like Internode, iiNet, AAPT, TPG, Bigpond, Optus and many more.

22 Dec 2009From telstra website
“We have listened to customer feedback and have made a decision to stop charging the $2.20 administration fee for bill payments made through the mail or in person at a Telstra Shop or Australia Post. See the details of this announcement.
We are currently implementing system changes to remove the $2.20 administration fee and will provide current customers with refunds in the coming months for any $2.20 administration fees they paid to Telstra since the new charge was introduced on 14 September 2009.

You do not need to call Telstra about this, as a refund for any $2.20 administration fees you have paid will be automatically applied as a credit to your current customer account with Telstra.”
Mr Thodey said Telstra would honour its commitment to a special offer of up to $50 Cash Back through to the end of December 2009 on selected Telstra Shop product purchases for customers who continue to sign up for direct debit payment options.
As the leader in australian telecom sector makes a better move towards customer service , just like Nab did as well removing unpopular fees customers were getting charged, we hope that Other companies like optus Also follow suit instead of charging customers $2.20 for them to pay their own mobile bill . I was very pissed off when i noticed this on my bill recently.
Here is some comments on this on another forum :
http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=765500
Optus to charge $2.20 for each paper bill??
..where the hell did they pull that out from?..
From 1st May each paper bill will hav addtional $2.20 surchage.
Will be considerng another phone & ISP company now..its BS.
Anyone other company doing this? or this is common practise now?———————
But I’ll bet your bill is not reduced by the amount of the new charge. It’s just another way to get more money out of you while claiming it’s saving you money. Did the letter let out a waft of poo smell when you opened it?
Regards,
g@z.———————
who wins? certainly not the customer.
If they want online bills they should offer a $2.20 discount to switch to it not charge you for paper bills.
-Death
—————————-
How about the thousands of people who don’t / cant use the internet?
I found signing up to get the paper bills a bit of a pain. That myaccount system for optus is annoying! It was down for a week when I first tried signing up too.
-Plastik8
——————
I can’t believe the number of people defending a blatant price gouge. Is anyone trying to say that it actually costs Optus $2.20 to print a paper bill?
Or is it rather that arbitrary and unjust charges are somehow acceptable?
Sure most people have an option. But should they be forced to do it?
If Optus implemented a policy where they would add $50 to your bill for holding your phone in your right hand then the solution is easy – use your left hand! But how stupid to suggest this as being reasonable.
I have had the pleasure of working for optus, and I have questioned similar decisions in the past, and have been assured it was about revenue raising and there was no justification for the cost.
What a bizarre, bizarre world we live in that people are content with that – not just complacent about it but will condescendingly defend it!
Just… wow.

Article from http://www.theage.com.au/national/optus-bill-fee-to-hit-poor-20090323-97hn.html
CONSUMER advocates say that new fees for people who prefer to receive their phone bills by mail will hurt low-income earners who do not have access to the internet.
From May 1, Optus will charge mobile phone customers up to $2.20 a month for receiving their bills in the post. The company imposed the fee for new mobile and landline customers in January.
Vodafone already charges $2.20 for paper bills but says it will waive the fee for anyone unable to access the internet.
"The telcos should follow the lead of some of the energy and utility providers who, if you agree to pay your bills online or by direct debit, give you a discount," Christopher Zinn, a spokesman for consumer association Choice, said.
He said not everyone had access to the internet and low-income earners could be affected. "It could be pensioners, migrants, it could be those who want to have a paper bill," he said.
Up and down they go . Though both of them are getting even media attention “Tiger Airways” & “Tiger Woods”
For both of them its a downwards spiral while tiger woods is getting a beating literally by his wife and also by the hounding media as would be expected , tiger airways is also getting beaten up by the media for their lax and thrifty ways ( according to some).
The count for Tigers “transgressions” has already rocketed upto Lady no 10 and who knows how many more to come. Truly all his favorite golf holes will be lost for a while while he collects his balls.
The Tiger Woods saga continues with claims he has been linked to a relationship with an adult movie star.
Holly Sampson, 36, is an alleged seventh mistress of Woods but The New York Post reports the number of women linked to the billionaire golf champion may be as high as nine.
Sampson, whose list of movies includes My First Sex Teacher, reportedly said through a lawyer she had no comment to make on the matter.
Apparently A passenger on tiger airways got charged double the fare for travelling along with the Guardian dog.
