Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children
The story:
Alice is bored sitting on the riverbank with her sister, who is reading a book. Suddenly she sees a White Rabbit, wearing a coat and carrying a watch, run past, lamenting running late. She follows it down a rabbit hole and falls very slowly down a tunnel lined with curious objects. When she finally hits the bottom, she finds she is standing in a curious room with many locked doors of all sizes…….Go see the movie or buy the book here to red the rest of the story

The mad tea party is one of the memorable parts of the story that will be remembered when you read the books and is well picturised in its all weirdness in the movie Alice in wonderland as well
“The Cheshire Cat appears in a tree, directing her to the March Hare’s house. He disappears but his grin remains behind to float on its own in the air prompting Alice to remark that she has often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat. Alice becomes a guest at a “mad” tea party along with the Hatter (now more commonly known as the Mad Hatter), the March Hare, and a sleeping Dormouse who remains asleep for most of the chapter. The other characters give Alice many riddles and stories. The Mad Hatter reveals that they have tea all day because time has punished him by eternally standing still at 6 pm (tea time). Alice becomes insulted and tired of being bombarded with riddles and she leaves claiming that it was the stupidest tea party that she had ever been to”

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and a half and setting off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. At least 6 people were killed, President Michele Bachelet said.
The quake hit at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST) and was centered 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake
The May 22, 1960 Chilean Earthquake
The May 22, 1960 earthquake occurred at 19:11 GMT, off the coast of South Central Chile. Its surface-wave magnitude was 8.6. The Moment Magnitude (a better measure of the earthquake’s energy release)was estimated at 9.5. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 39.5° South, 74.5° West, and the focal depth was 33 kms (20.5 miles).
A number of large foreshocks proceeded the main earthquake by about 30 minutes. The large foreshocks served as a warning and some lives were saved as many people had evacuated buildings and had taken to the safety of open space.
The earthquake was extremely destructive in Chile, particularly along the coastal area extending from Concepcion to the south end of Isla Chiloe. There was extensive damage and loss of life at Concepcion, Chile’s top industrial city. Near the city of Valdivia, the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks generated landslides which killed 18 people. At the port city of Valparaiso, a city of 200,000, numerous buildings collapsed.
Estimates of Fatalities and Property Damage: The number of fatalities associated with both the tsunami and the earthquake was never established accurately for the region. Estimates of fatalities ranged between 490 to 2,290, with no distinction as to how many of the deaths were caused by the earthquake and how many were caused by the tsunami waves. However, it is believed that most of the deaths were caused by the tsunami, while most of the property damage may have been caused by the earthquake.
A total of 130,000 houses were destroyed – one in every three in the earthquake zone. Total damage losses, including to agriculture and to industry, were estimated to be over a half billion dollars (1960 dollars).

Chinese New Year (Chinese: 春節, 春节, Chūnjíe; 農曆新年, 农历新年, Nónglì Xīnnián; or 過年, 过年, Guònián), also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year’s Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, i.e. the day of the second new moon after the day on which the winter solstice occurs, unless there is an intercalary eleventh or twelfth month in the lead-up to the New Year—in such a case, the New Year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice. (The next time this occurs is in 2033.) The Chinese New Year period ends with the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth day of the month.

The small mining town of Rosebery on Tasmania’s west coast is divided over the plans by some residents to sue the local mine owner. Ten residents say they have poisoned by the mine’s heavy metals
Rosebery owes its existence to the Minmetals minning company, which produces zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold, but 10 residents say they have been poisoned by the mine’s heavy metals. The mine is the town’s main employer and claims that it is poisoning locals has angered a much bigger group of Rosebery residents.
FROM CRIKEY:http://www.crikey.com.au/2009/07/10/is-rosebery-a-health-hazard/
In November last year, two women from the mining town of Rosebery in the hills of western Tasmania hit local media headlines with a call for an investigation into the presence of heavy metals in the water around their homes.
ROSEBERY MAP 7470
They got their investigation, but now they have rejected the findings of a Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services toxicology investigation into the presence of heavy metals in their town and health problems experienced by locals, saying the DHHS failed to conduct adequate testing of humans and ground water in their research.
Locals say they have suffered a range of symptoms including dizziness and hair loss from heavy metals that have seeped onto their properties.

Local woman Jo Powell was so concerned at the claims she set up an online website called Rosebery is not Contaminated.
FELICITY OGILVIE: Four-hundred people have already joined her Facebook page. But Jo Powell says some of the comments posted have been so offensive she’s had to remove them.
Testing for the presence of heavy metals and their effect on residents is not unusual in Australia. In 2007, residents of the West Australian town of Esperance were poisoned by lead carbonate dust being transported from a mine in Wiluna to the Port of Esperance for bulk loading.
Unlike Rosebery, in Esperance ground water was not an issue, but soil, marine sediment and air testing was undertaken by the West Australian government as well as isotopic fingerprinting linking the lead found in humans to that of the Wiluna mine.
